THE GOOD SAMARITANS OF GENEALOGY

One thing I absolutely love about people who do genealogy research is that in most cases they seem to be willing to help one another or keep their eyes open for those sir names that others are researching.

Yesterday I received an email from Sarah, who I had only met once, but we have a similar interest in Greek research.  She remembered that I was researching the Haramis line.  Her mother had asked her to go through some papers of a family member who had recently passed away.

There she found some pedigree charts from the Haramis family that she shared with me as well as a couple of other people.  I was so delighted to receive the charts!

Besides the great satisfaction one gets from researching their own families, it is also a gentle reminder of some of the wonderful people in this world who work for the common good of remembering those who came before us.

Thank You to all those who help to share in this work.  No matter if it is sharing reports, documents, pictures,stories etc, it all comes together.

Its interesting to observe how when we help someone else, it always comes full circle!

WHO WILL WRITE YOUR LIFE STORY

An important aspect of your family history is writing your own life story, rather than leaving it to someone else to do after you are gone.  It will be more accurate with accurate details.  After all, no one knows your feelings and experiences better than anyone.

Write about the people who had an effect on your life.  Listed below is the obituary of my Mission President, Louis Kent Payne. This was someone who had a profound effect on my life.  Be sure to include pictures if you can, they make the whole experience to prepare the writing as well as to read much  more pleasant.

I like to use the Roots Magic program because it gives you the option to create a book  including title pages, credits as well as a photo album.  However you can use any word processing program.

President Spencer W. Kimball stated that those who keep a daily journal are most apt to keep the Lord a part of their daily lives.  A great deal of information can be gleaned from the past of your life by writing and keeping journals.

My great grandfather, John Paskett Stevens wrote his life story shortly before he passed away.  He was able to recall memories of what life was like when his parents were fighting off the "Mormon crickets."  That has been a great experience for his posterity to read about events that took place during his childhood.  We can leave the same kind of treasure for those who come after us.

THE VALUE OF NEWSPAPERS IN FAMILY RESEARCH

 There are great resources for researching your family, both old and new publications.  The great thing about some of the old newspapers from a simpler time is that you could find birth records, obituaries, visitors from out of town visiting people in smaller communities.

Utah has newspapers online clear back into the 1800's.  Many states offer such a service, some are free but not all.  If you are looking for someone in particular and cannot find information, try such things as courts, marriage and death indexes, old publications.
